Following our visit to the Majorville Medicine Wheel and Cairn, Greg and I trekked westward across an ocean of parched grassland, passing a wedding party, abandoned homesteads, and iconic remnants of the community’s pioneer past. We then detoured south for a delicious burger and a glimpse of a prairie rarity on the edge of Milo.
The Majorville Store and Post Office began operating on this site northeast of Milo in 1958. The post office was closed in July 1970, and the store about five years later. Today the building is abandoned. #Alberta #history #abandoned #FABTrip15 @gregfarries A photo posted by Jonathan Koch (@forgotten_alberta) on

Founded in 1909, Liberty School served the Majorville community north of Milo for 30 years. The advent of consolidated school districts during the dry years led to the school’s closure in 1939. In the years that followed, the school hosted several community events, and was the setting for the 1987 National Film Board production, “Prairie Woman”. Very nice photos Jonathon, love your work. I’d LOVE to collaborate on a trip/adventure again, like we did a couple years ago.
Hey Chris – that would be great. Thanks also for the kind words. I’ll be in touch!
Very fortunate I stumbled across this post just before heading out to Majorville. The detour over to Liberty School was the highlight of the trip.
Hey Dan, I’m glad the post was useful. There was talk of hauling Liberty School into Milo, but this doesn’t seem to have happened yet.
